On March 1, 2023, the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), which is competent in the investigation of fraud against the financial interests of the EU, published its Annual Report for the activities carried out in 2022, which offers interesting insights on the current activities of this EU body.
Based on the Annual Report, the EPPO, in 2022, has received 3318 reports and opened 865 investigations. However, the total number of active investigations is 1117. The Annual report includes figures about operational activity at the central and national levels within the EU Member States that have joined the EPPO.
The most significant investigation by the EPPO is “Operation Admiral.” Within this operation, the EPPO discovered a VAT fraud scheme related to the sale of electronic goods, leading to damage amounting to approximately €2.2 billion. Agencies of many EU Member States conducted investigative measures about this fraudulent scheme involving various organized criminal groups.
